SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST
Tip for Getting Better Candid Photos

The beginning of a session is always a bit awkward for everyone involved. The photographer is busy trying to get into a shooting rhythm and clients are trying to get accustomed to having a camera aimed at them. I know going in that the first couple of shots are probably not going to be my favorite.  It takes time to build the intimacy I like to capture in my images.  I usually don’t start seeing those natural expressions/interactions until about 30 minutes or so into the session when my subjects have had a chance to relax and see the way I work. Don’t fret if you can’t capture great candids at the very start.  Build your client’s confidence with the easy stuff and work your way to the more candid-style shots. To make the most of my time, I start each session with the traditional shots and poses (i.e. everyone looks at the camera and smiles).  As the awkwardness wanes, I can start capturing the more intimate shots. Here’s an example:

This was one of the first shots I took of them. Standing with their heads touching for connection and both looking at the camera. After a few of these standard shots, we were able to get creative and have a lot more fun with our posing to yield more candid results.

Keeley @ My Life on a Plate - This is beautiful (and great advice). I’m not a pro by any means, but it’s hard for me to capture candid shots of my family (hubby and baby always cooperate, extended family not so much).

I also think it’s awesome that your parents are so happy and in love after all these years. Believe me, it’s rare. :)

Maddy {Mad Hearts Photography} - The key to my candids is that they’re not really candids. That’s not to say I don’t capture genuine emotions, however, I try to set the stage first. Instruct them to do something that will yield those “candid” results. I have a few tricks I use, but I’ll have to elaborate on that in a future post :)
