PORTRAIT OF THE WEEK // 8
52 Faces Project • Valencia

I loved photographing Valencia and her entire family over the summer, so I was so happy to have her volunteer on this 52 Faces Project. She is such a beautiful person – inside and out! So glad that we got to spend a little one-on-one time together. This portrait was photographed in a narrow alleyway. I love photographing in spaces like these (especially midday) because it provides plenty of shade from harsh lighting of the sun and by placing her right at the edge of the shadow and the brightly lit pavement outside the alley, the light back on her face beautifully.  I know I sound like a broken record, but it’s true! When I’m shooting portraits, it’s rare that my subject is ever in the sun’s direct path (unless it is an extremely cloudy day).  90% of the time, the light that is illuminating my subject’s face is indirect and comes from a natural or collapsible reflector. It’s a softer light that I find most flattering for portraits.

Life with Kaishon - Valencia is a beauty. I can see the lovely light that is within her shining through her smile : ). Great job working that alley!
