Fave Five {Summer Edition}

It’s been a while since I did a Fave Five, so I figured now would be a good time as any to bring you up to speed with what I’m enjoying these hot summer days with regards to books, tv, movies and music. I’ve discovered some new favorites and reacquainted myself with an old ones.  Are you interested??  Keep reading…

Mr. SaxoBeat: I still seem to be on a dance music kick and this one from Romanian artist Alexandra Stan is playing non-stop on my summer playlist!  Whenever I hear it, it instantly puts me in a good mood and  makes me “move like a freak”!

•Mad Men:  Where do I begin?!  Love everything about this show – the time, place, characters, plotlines, clothes – but if I had to choose one reason : main character Donald Draper (played by Jon Hamm).  He is great in the role of handsome, suave ad executive and  for the sake of keeping it real – he’s great eye candy too!

•The Help:  This book came highly recommended by friends for my trip. I finished it all on the flight, that’s how much I enjoyed it! And if you haven’t read it, now that the movie hits theater is the perfect time to pick it up for youself and see what all the fuss is about.

•Jersey Shore:  I didn’t tune in for the Miami season or their return to Jersey Shore, but I’m back on board again to see what shenanigans they’ll get themselves into on their trip to Italy. Besides I’m in desperate need of a reality TV fix until Season Two of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills airs.

•Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest: I didn’t plan on enjoying this documentary as much as I did (it was Kleber’s pick), but I was pleasantly surprised! Even if you’re not a hip hop fan, there’s something magical about watching musicians at work and hearing where they got their inspiration.

Tiera - I just saw Beats, Rhymes & Life — On a date! He got major points for liking both documentaries and 90’s hip hop :) I really want to read & watch The Help, but I don’t think I’ll get to it soon (SO many books in my closet to read before my next yard sale!), but I do want to read it eventually and then watch the movie on Netflix or from Redbox, I guess :)

Life with Kaishon - You are fascinating. I am buying my Mama that book today : )
I will read it when she is done.

Amy - I do so love your Fab 5s. I have yet to watch Mad Men (though friends tell me it’s right up my ally) or read The Help … though it is in my stack! :)

Cafe Fashionista - Haha! I have only seen the first season of Jersey Shore, but I can’t help but to love it. Snooki is such a character – I secretly want to be her BFF! :P

Belly B - I am loving 3 out of 5 of those things! Especially The Help!!! It’s one of the most amazing books I’ve EVER read, and Mad Men is just making me upset that I wasn’t born in that era because it’s so awesome! Kind of ashamed to say this, but I can’t wait for the next episode of Jersey Shore in Italy hahahaha.

Belly B :)

Mindy - I loved The Help…I got through it in 3 days. I am a little worried that the movie may disappoint, in my head I envisioned things a little darker than they look like they are portrayed on screen. Also, if you like Mad Men (I love that show), get caught up on Breaking Bad. sundays at 10 pm. You may need to netflix the first 2 seasons, but it is an unbelievably good show!

August 12, 2011 - 1:46 pm

The Guilty Hyena - I’m intrigued with Mad Men, but I think I missed the boat on that one, I don’t know which season they’re in now. I’ve given Jersey Shore a go, but it just doesn’t compel me, though I’m intrigued about their trip to Italy and how they are perceived over there.

August 12, 2011 - 1:52 pm

Christina Lee - I like your FF!!! I hear The Help movie is a good adaptation for the book too!

August 12, 2011 - 2:44 pm

alexandra keller - so i still haven’t started watching mad men. i know. what is wrong with me? i bought the first 2 seasons, and they’ve just been sitting there, starting back at me all summer. but get this. now that it’s on netflix, i think i might get DH to watch it with me!

August 13, 2011 - 10:47 am

Buckeroomama - I am reading The Help now! I actually checked it out from the library not really knowing much about it beyond the fact that it looks interesting… and then I started reading all over the web about the movie…

August 13, 2011 - 4:36 pm

dana - mad men sounds like a show i would enjoy! I hope it gets to sweden soon :)

August 13, 2011 - 10:28 pm

Keeley - I loved The Help and I just saw the movie today… it really got some great conversations started in my family. I’m giving the book to my (almost) 80 year old grandmother to read and I plan to buy her the DVD for Christmas.

Oh, and I love Mad Men…. love love LOVE. It’s very interesting to watch that show after seeing The Help. Both that book and that television show take place at the same time, different location. America is a very interesting country.

August 14, 2011 - 10:20 am

Lee Oliveira - Mad man is something that I would love to watch.. I have so favourites too.. I just can’t watch Jersey Shore.! :(

August 14, 2011 - 12:15 pm

Audrey Allure - I’ve been wanting to read The Help – definitely before I see the movie! And haha, love Jersey Shore!

August 14, 2011 - 9:03 pm

Camila Faria - I have to start watching Mad Men! Everybody I know is crazy about it!!!

August 15, 2011 - 7:44 am

very married - I just couldn’t get into the book. My mother in law mailed it to me because she thought I’d love it. BUT i did see the movie this weekend and I gotta admit that it was pretty darn cute

August 15, 2011 - 9:41 am

Maddy {Mad Hearts Photography} - I agree about the contrast of The Help and Mad Men. Even though racial relations were not ideal in the Mad Men world of NYC, it’s far better from the racial dynamics in the South during that very same time. The world of The Help was much darker and segregation was undeniable.

August 16, 2011 - 7:13 pm

Anaiz - I haven’t read The Help but I’m thinking I will try it, I trust your taste in books :):)

August 20, 2011 - 6:49 pm

Nadette - Now that I’ve finally finished Harry Potter, my next book/movie is The Help! I can’t wait to see the movie! I’m on a big dance music kick too, so I’ll have to check out this Mr. Saxo Beat, because I totally discovered Florence an the Machine based on your recommendation, so I have high hopes! Jersey Shore in Italy is *magical*–it is trashy reality TV at it’s best, and my crush on PaulyD is still going strong, lol. As for RHoBH, I’m so sad for Taylor, I wonder if they’ll even air the season. I feel bad for her, but I really want to see season 2. Does that make me a horrible person? #shrug
